Eagle’s Haven Golf Course officially opened in October 2022, but its origins date back about 20 years. Owner David Schmidt and his brother-in-laws once discussed the logistics of creating a private 9-hole course on 20 acres with three golf greens. David sketched out the idea and named it “Eagle’s Haven,” with “Eagle” referring to the golf term for completing a hole two strokes under par, and “Haven” evoking the vision of a private golf retreat for friends and family. While the discussion was memorable, the drawing was eventually tucked away.

Fast-forward 20 years: David found himself ready to transition to ownership of the business he had worked in for 32 years with his best friend. However, an opportunity arose to take over Madison’s beloved River Chase Golf Course, a property with a storied past as a horse track, country club, and even a temporary county fairground. David saw this as a chance for a new adventure and decided to rebrand the course. But to what? His brother-in-laws quickly reminded David of the old drawing, which inspired the new name: Eagle’s Haven Golf Course.

Eagle’s Haven combines golfing bliss with breathtaking natural views. The course offers a serene atmosphere and tight fairways that challenge golfers to make precise shots. Historic touches, like the bridge by hole 7, add character. On quiet days, you might spot deer, turkeys, or even bald eagles perched in the trees as you play.

Eagle’s Haven is a destination for golfers of all ages. David notes, “Seeing the interest and enthusiasm in golf from people of every age is my favorite part of the day.” For those who enjoy competition, the course hosts a women’s league on Monday evenings and a men’s league on Tuesdays. “I enjoy hearing the leagues talk about their strategies as they approach the end of their seasons,” David adds. The course also features fun events like the Caddyshack League and golf scrambles benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Madison Riverfront Super Overlook Project.

Eagle’s Haven Golf Course adds a delightful recreational option for visitors to Downtown Madison. “I love hearing how proud people are of their achievements on the course,” says David. It seems his decision to take over the golf course was truly a hole-in-one!
