BATTER UP! Make your business pitch to Risk-It

The Southeast Indiana Small Business Development Center has announced its second annual Risk-It Competition.

Risk-It is a contest sponsored by the Southeast ISBDC to encourage and award innovative ideas in the small business sector. Entrepreneurs with exceptional ideas for a new business, invention, or process can submit their ideas to www.riskitindiana.com. Contestants will present their ideas to guests and a panel of judges, with winning ideas selected for a first and second place prize package detailed on the website and the audience choice winner receiving a cash prize.

Risk-It will take place on August 28 at the Venture Out Business Center in Madison. Six to eight finalists will be selected from entries received prior to July 15, 2013. Finalists will be chosen by members of the Southeast ISBDC but all entries will be eligible for no-cost counseling from our knowledgeable staff. Finalists will be contacted by email within a week of entry.

Each of the finalists will have five minutes to present his or her pitch to the audience and judges. Both the audience and panel of judges will vote on which idea they believe is the best and most marketable. Three awards will be given: the Judges’ First and Second Place Awards and the People’s Choice Award. The winners will be announced that night and honored at the LEADS Indiana Awards Luncheon in Jeffersonville, Ind., on November 13, 2013.

The winners of both awards will be given the opportunity to work with the ISBDC and other local business professionals to develop their ideas into viable business ventures.

It's spring on Main Street!

After a very long winter, spring has returned to Madison. With it come the outdoor events that bring us all together in Madison’s beautiful downtown commercial district.

Main Street Program got its season of Fourth Friday Art Jams off to a great start on March 22. An impressive array of stores were open late, along with music at many venues. The fun continues on Friday, May 24, and every Fourth Friday through November.

Farmers Market is returning to Broadway three days a week — Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Spring visitors will find free range eggs, plants, honey, baked goods and music. As a Saturday treat, Paradise Cove Catering will be cooking its famous fresh-air breakfast.

May offers many events with general appeal, such as the Madison in Bloom Spring Garden Tour on May 11, 12, 18 and 19, the River Roots music festival on May 17 and 18 and the Old Court Days event for crafts and collectibles on May 24-26.

There are so many reasons to come downtown this spring — not least of which is the chance to shop in Madison’s downtown commercial district or at independent retailers located on the hilltop. Enjoy your spring shopping excursions!
